Two men have been detained and are in custody in connection with the death of Liam Aitchison said Northern Constabularly today.

Northern Constabulary set up a major enquiry team following the suspicious death of 16 year-old Liam Aitchison last week.

Liam’s body was discovered in a hidden disused property in Steinish on the outskirts of Stornoway a week last Tuesday.  He had been missing for seven days and was last seen around the town’s Macaulay Road Co-op around 9pm on Tuesday 22nd November.

Officers searching for him found his body in an abandoned concrete hut on the edge of Stornoway airport.  Evidence at the death scene sparked a large scale investigation.

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen three people wearing hooded tops walking in the Steinish village area shortly after midnight on the night Liam disappeared.

It is the islands’ first serious death inquiry for five years, since 55-year-old Lewis man Murdo Macdonald was viciously attacked by a gang in September 2006.  Four men were charged with murder over his death.

The case did not receive much attention with the established local media. Only Hebrides News attended the court hearings.  In a case which involved appalling gratuitous violence three men were later imprisoned after pleading guilty to serious assault.

A police error meant a “confession” of a fourth youth could not be used in court. His not guilty plea to serious assault was accepted after a pre-trial hearing.

There has not been a murder conviction in the Western Isles in living memory. A high profile murder trial over the death of Mary Mackenzie, 80, of Brue, Lewis, in 1968 returned a not proven verdict for 21-year-old George Macleod.
