Refurbished Stornoway Town Hall officially opened 29/3/12
The refurbished Stornoway Town hall was officially opened yesterday by Sandy Matheson, former Provost of Stornoway Town Council, and Convenor of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Alex A MacDonald.
The opening event was attended by over 60 guests, including Councillors, key project partners and representatives from local organisations.
Nicolson Institute pupils, Annabel MacLennan and Calum MacPhee, read from Derrick Thomson’s poem “Machair” during the opening ceremony.
Speaking at the opening event, which will be his last civic function as Convenor, Cllr Alex A MacDonald said: “The Town Hall will serve to promote, sustain and enhance the cultural traditions and heritage of the islands, providing visitors and residents alike with information on attractions and events all over the islands.
“The Town Hall will, I am sure, play a key role in making Stornoway a vibrant and lively focal point for the Islands and a centre for our community. Together with the refurbished Perceval Square and the Town Building improvements, the centre of Stornoway now has a new lease of life.”
