Linda Norgrove was born in 1974 in Sutherland where her mother was from. Linda spent
her childhood on Lewis -
The family have a croft and kept cattle and other small livestock. Linda and her sister Sofie had a highland pony.
She went to the local primary school in Uig which had around 30 pupils and three teachers.
She transferred to the Nicholson Institute in Stornoway for her secondary education.
Linda’s parents were keen on foreign travel and the family travelled independently to third world countries for 5 weeks during the winter every second year.
She obtained sufficient Highers for university entrance at 17, left school early and spent a gap year working for a trotting horse stable in Belgium and then travelling around Spain and France.
Linda’s father John Norgrove, 60, was born in Birmingham. He is a retired civil engineer.
He worked as a design and construction water engineer for Western Isles Council before a five year stint as manager for the North of Scotland Water Authority, now Scottish Water.
Linda’s mother Lorna, 62, was raised in Sutherland. She has managed the Mangersta croft for the past 30 years.
She obtained an Open University arts degree in 2000 and started the charity ‘Western Isles beach Clean Up’ which has, for the past 10 years, promoted and undertaken sponsored beach cleanups and other fund raising activities to raise money for Water Aid, a charity providing clean water and sanitation to the developing world.
The couple have another daughter, Sofie, who is two years younger than Linda, lives in Southwest Scotland, and is married with two young boys.
