Phone lines out of action          8/6/12

Landline telephone services covered by the Balallan exchange on Lewis and Barra are out of action this morning after thieves apparently damaged the subsea cable while trying to steal it at low tide at Loch Carron on the mainland.

It is estimated that telephone services will be lost for some considerable time.

The 999 lines are also affected and additional police patrols have been established in the area along with static response points.

Members of the public who require assistance from any of the ‘999’ emergency services should make their way to Balallan Primary School and Barra Police station .

A communication blackout also affected some mobile telephones networks and broadband internet services in the islands.
