Crash car drove in middle of the road       21/3/13

Two men were killed in a head-on crash because one vehicle was driving in the middle of the road, a fatal accident inquiry has said.

Ronnie Macphee, 45, originally from Daliburgh, died when his silver Fiat Punto and a 44-tonne articulated lorry collided on a bend on the A82 Glasgow-Fort William road around 3.20pm on 8 March last year.

The steward on a Cal Mac ferry belonged to South Uist where he was brought up and has an extended family. The father of two was driving home to Mallaig on leave from the Arran ferry, MV Caledonia Isles.

A fatal accident inquiry was held in Fort William Sheriff Court in September.

The driver of the lorry, Stewart McGifford, 48, who lived with his girlfriend in Caol, Fort William, also died in the accident which occurred about a mile outside Glencoe village.

The lorry, owned by Ferguson Transport, was heading south with a full load of timber planks. Its cargo spilled onto the roadway after it overturned in the crash.

In his findings released this week, Sheriff Vinit Khurana said the accident was caused by Mr Campbell’s car being three feet onto the wrong side of the road.

The lorry was speeding at 54mph in a 40mph zone but the sheriff said this was not a contributory factor to the crash.
