Dead teenager’s family accept Matthew Wright apology 19/12/11
The parents of dead Lochboisdale teenager Liam Aitchison have accepted an apology from TV presenter over an offensive quip he made.
The family said they have “spoken with Matthew Wright and have accepted his apology for comments made regarding Liam's death.”
They added: “We would like now to draw a line under the whole Wright stuff incident and ask people to focus on the process of justice for Liam."
Broadcasting regulator Ofcom is to investigate TV presenter Matthew Wright after receiving over 2200 complaints over his comments on his Channel 5 chat show, The Wright Stuff, over two consecutive days.
Wright put on a mock Scottish accent and mimicked TV detective Taggart’s catchphrase, “there’s been a murder.”
His offhand apology the following day sparked further controversy by telling his critics to “grow up.”
A memorial service for Liam Aitchison, conducted by Fr Roddy Johnston, is being held at the Our Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church, Scotland Street, Stornoway, at 1pm tomorrow (Tuesday, 20th December).
This simple but reverent 'Service of the Word' will include items of sung praise, Scripture readings, prayers, and some appropriate remarks about Liam himself, with participation by adherents of other Christian traditions on Lewis.
All who knew Liam during his months on Lewis and are affected by his death are warmly invited.
Two Lewis youths face charges over Liam’s death.
