Red Arrows set off from Stornoway on epic journey across the Atlantic
17 August 2024
The Red Arrows touched down in Stornoway today (Saturday) on their first stop of
the Royal Air Force aerobatic team’s five week tour of Canada marking the centennial
of the Royal Canadian Air Force.
The journey there will take a few stages and overnight stops as their Hawk jets cannot
refuel in mid-air over the Atlantic.
The 12-strong fleet of aircraft undertook safety checks and topped up their tanks
at Stornoway Airport in preparation of a transit to Iceland. They took off in the
afternoon, arriving in Keflavik a couple of hours later.
Ahead of their Stornoway landing, spectators keen to see the famed aircraft flocked
to vantage points around the perimeter of the airfield. Similar sized crowds lined
nearby roadways again when the planes departed in two stages.
