Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is marking Young Carers Action Day 2025 with the launch
of Young Carers Groups in Harris, Uist and Barra.
The new groups will build on the success of the Lewis Young Carers Group which has
provided support to Young Carers from Pointers in Stornoway since 2014. There was
previously a young carers group in Harris but it has not operated for the last few
years.
All four groups are open to young people aged 8-18 who have caring responsibilities.
The groups give young people the opportunity to take a break from their caring responsibilities
and engage with activities, meet new people and chill out in a relaxing environment.
Individuals who do not want to engage directly with the group can engage with the
team online or in person to get support on any aspect of being a young carer.
The groups are operated by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Community Learning and Development
(CLD) officers in each area.
Paul Steele, Leader of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar said: “I would like to take this
opportunity to thank our amazing young carers for all they do.
“Young Carers across the Outer Hebrides give up their own time to support and care
for family members.
“This amazing work is deserving of huge recognition and the young people involved
are deserving of our support.
“The theme of this year’s Young Carers Action Day is “give me a break”.
“With today’s announcement I am delighted that no matter where in the Outer Hebrides
Young Carers are based, they will be offered the chance to take a break in a safe,
supportive and enjoyable environment.”
