This week will be cold and unsettled say the Met Office. Snow and ice will cause
disruption for some, with new warnings issued.
Yellow severe weather warnings for snow and ice currently in place to Wednesday include
the Western Isles.
Snow and hail showers will affect the Hebrides and northern Scotland at times, becoming
heavier and more frequent tonight (Monday), through much of Tuesday and then overnight
into Wednesday morning.
Two to five centimetres of snow is likely to accumulate quite widely, with up to
10cm in some places by the end of Tuesday, and perhaps 15 to 20cm accumulating above
300 metres.
Showers may be sleety at times along north-facing coasts, although icy surfaces are
likely at times.
Police Scotland urged island motorists to take care: “A yellow weather warning is
in place for snow and ice across Western Isles today (Monday). Drivers should plan
ahead and ensure you have sufficient fuel, warm clothing, food, water and a charged
mobile in case of any delays.”
An Arctic maritime airmass already over Scotland spreads southwards into the rest
of the UK on Tuesday, in wake of an Atlantic low clearing into northwestern Europe.
Cold northerly winds mean daytime temperatures will be in the low single figures
for most. Despite the cold temperatures, there will be a good deal of sunshine away
from the wintry showers near the coasts.
Further snow accumulations are expected across the week, mostly by night at low levels,
in northern Scotland and exposed parts elsewhere.
