South Uist embarked on a race against time to rescue a group of pilot whales which stranded around the Loch Boisdale shore line.
The whales were in difficulty in very shallow waters when the tide ebbed on Friday. Five died and a further two are at risk.
Around 30 locals tried to refloat the pod from the shore while Uist Sea Tours and Mowi (formerly Marine Harvest) deployed boats, encouraging eight whales back to sea.
