A man who hailed from the Western Isles drowned after his electric-powered motorised wheelchair fell of a quayside and into the water.

Coastguard were alerted and Poole RNLI inshore lifeboat was speedily on the scene on Tuesday of last week.

Murdo Macleod Mackenzie was recovered out of the water after 20 minutes by lifeboat crew assisted by fire personnel.  Coastguard were alerted and ambulance and medical staff also attended.

The 74-year-old retired electrical engineer who lived six miles away in Bournemouth was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Mackenzie, married to Margaret, was born in Stornoway in 1950 but lived in Bournemouth it was heard at an inquest into his death.

There are no suspicious circumstances for Mr Mackenzie's death.

The provisional cause of death was indicated to be drowning

Previously, Dorset Police said area was blocked off during the incident.

Police said: “Very sadly, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The man’s next of kin has been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

“A cordon was put in place to allow emergency services to deal with the incident.”

South Western Ambulance Service despatched a double-crewed ambulance, a critical care car and an operations officer to the scene.

The inquest was adjourned to allow medical reports to be submitted.
