Hebrides News

Lochs and river levels in the Western Isles currently remain within normal conditions.

However, levels have decreased slightly in recent days due to reduced rainfall though this may be countered by showers and some localised heavy rain forecast over the week.

Three weeks ago water scarcity conditions in the Outer Hebrides commanded a significant alert following an uncharacteristically dry first part of summer.

The latest water scarcity report from Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), reveals most of the country has now recovered to Normal Conditions or Early Warning.

This is in stark contrast to just three weeks ago when five areas of Scotland had reached Significant, the highest level available, following a period of prolonged dry weather.

During this week, a mix of outbreaks of rain and showers are possible for most, perhaps turning heavy and thundery, especially across the Hebrides and north-west.

The start of August is likely to see further unsettled conditions.

The outlook for the July – September period also suggests that across the UK there is double the usual chance of hot weather. The current long-term forecast indicates that this summer is likely to experience normal levels of rainfall.
