A former Lewis soldier and bagpiper has been honoured in being selected to head a parade of the Queen’s Own Highlanders Association at the Cenotaph in London on Remembrance Sunday.

Andy Macleod, who hails from Garrabost in Point, led a procession of veterans.

On the evening before the Parade of Remembrance, former soldiers and families of the regiment gathered in the city for an informal mess dinner and reflected on fallen comrades of the Queens Own Highlanders, the Seaforth Highlanders, Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders and most recently, the Highlanders (Seaforth’s, Gordon’s and Cameron’s).

This year is particularly significance for the Queen’s Own Highlanders as it marks the 40th anniversary of the year in which the regiment suffered its greatest loss of men. Five soldiers killed in Northern Ireland in 1979 - Pte A McMillan 49 - Crossmaglen; Cpl D Lang and Cpl D Wares - Bessbrook; Lt Col D Blair Commanding Officer and L/Cpl V Macleod - Warren Point.

Mr Macleod said: “The contingent was privileged this year to have the widows of Lt Col Blair and Cpl Lang March in the ranks of the Queens Own Highlanders, showing how important it is to remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice serving their regiments proudly.”

Mr Macleod was resplendent in military medals awarded to family members - Pte Murdo Macsween who was killed at the Somme in 1916 while fighting with the Seaforths, and Seaman Murdo Montgomery of the Royal Navy Reserve.
