Uist and Benbecula are the third wettest coastal spots in the UK according to analysis of Met Office weather data between 1991 and 2020.
It’s no great surprise locations on the edge of the Atlantic where prevailing weather systems release cloud loads of moisture absorbed after travelling thousands across the ocean would headline the list.
Sykes Holiday Cottages commissioned the list to find out which seaside towns across the nation experience the most rainfall.
Top of the poll is Aultbea in the west Highlands which receives an average of 121 millimetres of rainfall per month. It also experiences more than 1 millimetre of rainfall for 209 days out of the year on average.
Tiree ranks second with an average reading of 106 millimetres of rain.
Lochboisdale was named as the third rainiest place but since the study looked at readings taken at the Met Office facility on the rocket range near the north end of South Uist, Balivanich in Benbecula should really have been awarded the honour as it’s much closer to the weather station.
