Hebrides News

The TSB has shut its Stornoway branch for good citing a drop in the number of customers using its counter services to undertake transactions.

Most customers have moved to digital and online banking services said the bank.

A pop-up facility limited to providing money advice only will be provided in the Lanntair centre on three days a week.

One factor in the selection process for the part-time advice service was its accessibility.

However, many banking services including cash withdrawals, deposits or cheque payments will not be available at the pop-up with the TSB advising being advised to go to the post office to carry out cash transactions.

But wheelchair users, people with disabilities and walking restrictions will find it difficult to access the steps at the Stornoway Post Office.

No compulsory redundancies are expected from the closure with the three existing staff members redeployed on a working from home basis in other roles when not covering the replacement pop-up service.

In most other areas in the UK, a TSB pop-up site only opens once a week but this is extended to three days weekly for Stornoway as travelling to Inverness to the next nearest TSB bank is not feasible.

For cash withdrawals, deposits or cheque payments, people can use the bank’s rivals’ cash machines.

Ultimately, many customers may find it more convenient to move their account to another bank with a face-to-face branch in the town.
