Tributes have been paid to Dr Donald Taylor of Point, Lewis who died recently.

Dr Taylor was a pharmacist with ICI before coming to Stornoway to work as a chemist.

The Glasgow University graduate went on to establish Back Pharmacy, the first chemist shop in rural Lewis.

He was one of the early pioneers supporting the Point and Sandwick Trust (PST) community wind farm project and joined the board when it was set up in 2005.

A PST spokesperson said: “He remained a stalwart and enthusiastic supporter after retiring from the board three years ago, and was a frequent and welcome visitor to the office to have a coffee and catch up with our gossip.

“He was also the founder, first chair and mainstay of the Young at Heart club in Tiumpan, and was tireless in his work for the senior citizens of Point, latterly as a Befriending volunteer with Point and Sandwick Befrienders.

“Donald had deep roots in Northend Shulishader, and he was the instigator and driving force behind the Shulishader Geodha project, keeping a critical and encouraging eye on progress, and very pleased when the project was completed a few weeks ago.

“A lively and gregarious character, tremendously big-hearted and no one who asked Donald for help or advice on any matter would go away empty handed.

“Donald was held in high regard and cherished by everyone in our community and we will all miss him.

“Our deepest sympathy is with his family and friends at this time.”
