Supermarket’s alternative saver promotion    11/4/14

People power has persuaded a supermarket giant to come up with a saver offer especially for island customers.

Shoppers complained that Tesco’s Clubcard Fuel Save scheme - which gives money off at the petrol pumps - missed out the islands where there are no Tesco fuel stations.

Mainland customers can get two pence off a litre of fuel for every £50 spent on in the supermarket. A £500 monthly shopping bill would mean a 20p per litre discount.

But the deal is useless in the Western Isles where Tesco does not have any petrol pumps.

Islanders were annoyed at missing out so local store managers urged head office to devise an alternative.

The retail giant caved in to give island customers double clubcard points at the till which can be redeemed for shopping vouchers.

A spokesperson for Tesco in Scotland said: “Tesco’s Clubcard Fuel Save scheme launched in March and provides our customers with a great opportunity to save money on their fuel.

“While customers can still take advantage of any Fuel Save savings on the mainland, we know that there are customers in certain stores that won’t be able to.

“That’s why to say thank you to our customers’ loyalty, we’ve launched a double Clubcard points promotion for all Clubcard customers affected.”

The islands’ double points promotion runs in Stornoway until Saturday 19 April and will also be available in Orkney and Shetland.
