The comhairle is reviewing the operation of early learning and childcare across the
Western Isles.
A survey asks parents about their experiences in accessing provision, and the flexibility
and suitability of provision.
Their views are sought if they were aware of their entitled number of funded hours,
did they use all of their childcare hours, and if a suitable place was available.
The results will help inform the development of a revised Early Learning and Childcare
Delivery Plan which is published every two years and sets out a strategic direction.
Under the law the local authority must consult every two years with parents of children
under school age in the area about how they should make early learning and childcare
available.
The survey gives parents the chance to share their preferences on models, flexibility,
types of setting where they wish to access their child's early learning and childcare
(for example, across public, private, third and childminding settings) and systems
of choice so that parents can inform options on offer and local authorities can develop
systems to allocate options.
The consultation seeking views on the type and mix of settings available in the area;
parents preferred in options over length and timing of sessions including whole day,
half day and number of days per week.
It also looks at the desire for Gaelic medium provision.
The council is required to considered this feedback and publish a plan setting out
how they intend to make early learning and childcare available.
