Women’s football in the Western Isles has moved up a league thanks to CalMac’s Community Fund.
Over 140 young women took part in the Lewis and Harris Women’s Football Association (LHWFA) organised festival of football from across the islands.
Another event was a football festival in Leverburgh for primary age girls with over 60 participants from across the islands’ chain plus ten coaches.
The events were held before the lockdown.
Euan Macleod of the LHWFA said: ‘Our projects have enabled girls from throughout the Western Isles to meet and compete against each other.”
As a way of sustaining the sport, the association proactively encourages players to become coaches, building up experience by volunteering with training for juniors. The club pays for 16-year-olds to gain their SFA coaching qualifications.
A grant from Cal Mac paid the travel expenses for four girls to attain their coaching award in Dingwall.
The ferry firm’s corporate social responsibility manager, Gordon McKillop, said: ‘I’m delighted we have been able to support the growth in girl’s football in the Western Isles. We have helped lay the foundations for which I’m sure will be sustainable growth of the sport across the islands in the future.’
