Sunken shellfish trawler is uprighted

23 December 2020

A fishing boat has been uprighted after sinking in Stornoway harbour at the weekend.

MFV Prevail went down when she flooded late on Friday night

The 16-metre-long vessel was berthed by the fish mart on North Beach quay when the incident occurred.

Firefighters used two portable pumps in a bid to try and stem the intake of water but the vessel was listing heavily to port and eventually foundered.

She ended up on her side below the surface of the water.

The shellfish trawler appeared to be drifting out from the quayside as the lift progressed on Tuesday night.

Two cranes hoisted the vessel, enabling her to be uprighted. The cranes continued to be by the boat until about 6pm on Wednesday evening.

She now seems to be sitting on the seabed. The vessel is tied fast to the bollards with the sea covering her deck as the tide comes in.
