Stornoway’s relief ferry MV Isle of Lewis has broken down, cancelling her timetable.

Problems arose in one engine forcing the vessel to limp back to the pier at slow speed on the other it is understood.

The vessel turned back to her berth shortly after departing for Ullapool this afternoon.

She was about half way between the pier and Arnish lighthouse when the ship slowed down dramatically and her captain gave the order to turnaround.

Initially, the sailing was suspended while engineers investigated the issue.

An hour later Cal Mac announced travel to the mainland was cancelled as is the run from Ullapool to the island.
