Pupils at the Stornoway Primary are marking the 50th year anniversary of their school with the re-enactment of a flitting from the old to the new.

Until 1969, children of all ages in the town attended classes in different buildings on the then Nicolson Institute campus.

Older pupils received lessons in the Francis Street building beside the present Free Church seminary.

The primary school was based in Matheson Hall on Matheson Road. That year, pupils stepped out of there to journey to their newly constructed standalone school on Jamieson Drive which was named the Stornoway Primary.

That event is being commemorated this Thursday morning with over 500 people walking from Matheson Hall to the present school.

All former pupils and staff as well as members of the public are invited to join them on the short trek.

Alison Macaskill of the Stornoway Primary said the school would be delighted to welcome all who turn up.

She said everybody is invited not just people with a connection to the school.

She explained: “We are congregating at the front of Matheson Hall building for a 10am start.

“All the pupils, staff and nursery children will be there.”

Arrangements are being made for the procession to be led by bagpipers along the route.

The group will head up Matheson Road and onto Goathill Road towards the school.

“People can just pop along and join in - there is no need to register beforehand,” added Ms Macaskill.

Afterwards the walkers will be rewarded with a cup of tea, a sing-along and a chance to reminiscence about past school days.
