The first mosque in the Western Isles has opened.

Prayers were held in the building yesterday after fitting out work finished.

 

A large crowd are travelling from the mainland to celebrate with local Muslims for an official opening today.

A visiting imam from London will lead prayers.

Project manager Aihtsham Rashid (pictured right) said all islanders are welcome to visit during an open afternoon taking place between 2pm and 5pm today.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Renovation work on a derelict house in James Street was completed at speed after a fundraising appeal took off, allowing the mosque to be ready in time for Ramadan, the Muslim holy month, which starts next week

 

Donations stand at nearly £95,000, almost double the target amount. Surplus funds will be held in reserve to help with running costs.
