The Stornoway Gazette is now under the wing of a new owner after its parent company, JPIMedia, was purchased by National World for £10 million.

JPIMedia has only existed for two years after being created to acquire newspaper assets from the debt-laden Johnston Press stable in November 2018.

The Stornoway Gazette fell into administration along with the rest of the Johnston Press group.

Rights to the weekly title and the monthly Back in the Day publication were purchased by JPI and are now transferred to National World.

The acquisition comes after a difficult year for print newspapers when circulation took a hammering during lockdown when people stayed at home and shops restricted access.

National World is also a newspaper takeover venture, headed by David Montgomery, the former boss of Daily Record owner, Reach.

David Montgomery, said he will “implement modern technology to grow the business across a wider footprint based on high quality, unique content.”

National World aims to create a “modern platform for news publishing with a new operational model supporting local sites across the entire UK.”

Included in the deal is the entire JPI portfolio including well known daily newspapers such as the Scotsman, Edinburgh Evening News and the Yorkshire Evening Post as well as around 200 regional publications.
