Stornoway Port has won a prestigious industry award for its new £59 million deep
water terminal.
The British Ports Association award recognises harbour authorities which demonstrate
significant development and improvement efforts.
The new quay facility completed in April 2024, is the biggest infrastructure project
in the Outer Hebrides, enabling the port to accommodate the largest cruise ships
and support the renewables industry.
The terminal, completed on budget, is set to drive economic growth through increased
cruise traffic, energy sector engagement, and expand cargo operations.
The project has delivered a new terminal with a cruise ship berthing facility capable
of accommodating vessels up to 360 metres in length and a new deep-water dock for
large cargo vessels, to allow the berthing and unloading of components for renewable
energy and other key industry sectors.
The new harbour opened for businesses in April when MS Ambition became the first
large vessel to dock. The installation of a berthing dolphin deck allows ships up
to 360 metres to tie up safely.
Many shipping lines avoided Stornoway as bigger vessels had to anchor out in the
bay with passengers ferried ashore in small tenders. Now, they can walk down a gangway
onto double decker buses running passengers into the town.
