Police Scotland chief Inspector Jane Mackenzie is to be the guest speaker at the next meeting of Stornoway Community Council.

Kenneth Burns, vice chair of Stornoway Community Council, said: “Stornoway residents have the right to attend and speak at community

council meetings.

“Given the long-standing disquiet in the town about teenage anti-social behaviour, this meeting will give people the opportunity to ask questions about exactly what is going on with policing in Stornoway.”

Secretary of the community council, Mike Macleod, said: “Statistics from the Scottish Children’s Report Administration ‘proved’ that for the last three years the criminal referral rate for young people in the Western Isles has been much higher, than either Scotland as a whole or the other island council areas.

“In addition there are worries about what seems to be the easy availability of drugs in Stornoway.”

The meeting takes place at 7pm this Thursday in the Fàilte Centre, Bayhead Street, Stornoway.

Recently police urged islanders to report anti-social incidents and not to assume police are aware.

Police Scotland acknowledged antisocial behaviour has a “disruptive effect” on local communities, and “we will act on any information we receive.”

Police say they carry out regular patrols of highlighted areas in the islands to increase police visibility and accessibility, and to deter and detect offences.

The public can be “assured we will take appropriate action where necessary.”

Parents and guardians are also asked to ensure “they know where their children are, who they are associating with and what they are doing.”
