A storm is bearing down on the Western Isles with adverse conditions set to hit the islands on Monday and Tuesday.

Named Storm Brendan by the Irish metrological service, high winds will affect the UK west coast.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning of wild winds.

Wintry, thundery showers and rising wind speeds are expected on Sunday.

A force eight gale is due by Monday daytime, intensifying to southerly force 10 that afternoon.

The Met Office said: “A widely very windy period expected Monday afternoon and evening with some disruption to travel likely.”

High-sided vehicles should drive with caution on exposed routes and bridges.

There could be short term powercuts.

Some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities may be affected by spray or large waves.

Stormy weather with wintry showers will continue across the Western Isles overnight into Tuesday even though the official weather warning does not extend that far.

As the weather front passes, a lull will bring provide a brief respite until a severe south westerly gale arrives on Wednesday.
