Risk of 80 mph gusts and dangerous coastal conditions for Western Isles warns Met Office

18 December 2024

Fierce winds are set to batter the Western Isles over Saturday with dangerous coastal conditions expected with large waves an additional hazard, especially at causeways. Warns the Met Office.

The period of strong winds may lead to significant transport disruption including CalMac ferry cancellations.

Gusts up to 75mph are expected with a risk of gusts in excess of 80mph.

There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties says the Met Office.

A yellow warning of strong winds has been issued by the Met Office running between 7am and 9pm on Saturday.

Very strong westerly winds are expected to develop through the course of the day in association with a deep area of low pressure.

Ferry sailings risk being cancelled while road delays may occur due to overturned vehicles and closed causeways.

A busier than usual travel period in the run up to Christmas is also a factor which may result in an increased chance of impacts.

There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs

Some delays to public transport are likely, as well as disruption to travel by road.

Intending travellers should also check closer to the time if Sunday ferry services will be affected.
