A deep area of low pressure, which will bring impacts to large parts of the UK on
Saturday and Sunday, has been named.
A period of strong southeasterly winds is likely for a time in the Western Isles
on Saturday, with peak gusts of 50-60 mph in many parts of the warning area, but
60-70 mph in some coastal areas and also locally to the lee of high ground.
There’s potential for gusts over 70 mph along some exposed coasts including the Hebrides.
Storm Bert will reach the UK on Saturday, bringing heavy rain and snow, together
with strong winds to large swathes of the country.
A severe weather warning for high winds have been issued for Saturday affecting the
Western Isles.
At present a separate weather warning for Sunday excludes the Hebrides but the forecast
is for strong winds locally.
Ahead of Storm Bert, wintry showers will continue to impact parts of the UK on Thursday
and Friday, particularly exposed areas in the north.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Holley said: “Storm Bert marks a shift
to much milder air and wintry hazards will gradually diminish through the weekend,
but heavy snowfall is expected across parts of northern England and Scotland for
a time on Saturday, especially over higher ground, and warnings are in place.”
