The Calanais Visitor Centre redevelopment project has reached a significant milestone
with the arrival of steel on site.
This marks a pivotal moment in the construction process, as the project transitions
from groundwork to the erection of the new visitor centre’s structure.
Mark Davies, project delivery manager for Urras nan Tursachan, the organisation which
runs the facility, said: “The arrival of the steel is a major step forward.
“We are excited to see the framework of the new visitor centre begin to take shape,
as this will give the community and visitors a tangible sense of the new centre.”
This first consignment of steel will be used to form the multi-function room which
will be an addition to the new centre offering great facilities and views.
The raising of the metal framework in the coming months will provide a clear indication
of the building’s layout and design.
The redevelopment project aims to create a great community facility and a world-class
experience for everyone who visits the Calanais Standing Stones.
The new £10 million visitor centre will include a new café, shop, major new exhibition,
versatile function space and improved parking and access.
New jobs will be created in addition to boosting the local economy.
“This project is more than just building a visitor centre; we are creating a sustainable,
year-round destination for locals and visitors alike,” said Kenny Maclennan, local
Calanais resident and board member of Urras nan Tursachan.
Although the visitor centre, carpark and toilets are closed during the redevelopment
works, the adjacent standing stones are open to the public.
Visitor numbers at the site are predicted to rise from around 150,000 at present
to 200,000 by 2030, driven by the opening of the deep water cruiseliner port in Stornoway
in addition to a projected rise in in leisure tourism.
