A special mass in the Diocese of Argyll and the Isles will be dedicated to the late
Pope Francis.
The Pope died aged 88 at 7.35am on Monday after suffering a stroke and heart failure.
His funeral will be held on Saturday morning in Rome.
This coming Monday Bishop Brian McGee will celebrate Mass for Pope Francis in St
Columba’s Cathedral, Oban, the main cathedral for the diocese.
A number of islanders from the Western Isles are expected to attend.
The diocese said: “All are welcome to come together as a diocese to pray for our
beloved Francis.”
In a tribute this week Bishop McGee said: “May he rest in peace. Pope Francis was
a true servant of the Lord and the People of God who, literally to the end, poured
out his life for others. He was a great defender of the poor, the vulnerable and
all those who were marginalised in any way.
“I had the privilege of being in his company several times and I was most impressed
by his deep spirituality which obviously arose from a lifetime of reflective prayer.
“It is fitting that the Lord called him during the Easter Octave for he lived and
witnessed continually to the Risen Christ. We are an Easter People and the Lord has
called him to his eternal reward.”
Pope Francis will be buried in the Basilica of St. Mary Major in the Pauline Chapel,
which houses the ancient icon of Maria Salus Populi Romani, as he requested in his
final will. The simple underground tomb will have only ‘Franciscus’ written on it.
