Spanish buyout saves Arnish yard and secures jobs

19 December 2024

A UK-Government backed deal will see Spanish state-owned Navantia buy out Harland and Wolff (H&W), securing the future of all four yards in the UK, including Arnish in Lewis.

The deal - which is subject to regulatory approval - saves the jobs of 350 skilled workers at the company’s sites in Arnish and Fife, as well as Belfast and Appledore in Devon.

Workers’ existing terms and conditions will be protected under the takeover pledged the government.

Navantia currently collaborates with H&W over sharing forthcoming construction work for three ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) which transports supplies food, ammunition, spares and supplies to the Royal Navy’s fleet.

Today’s announcement safeguards the contract in which Navantia is the main shipbuilder and ensures part of the manufacturing work remains in the UK. The government is expected to agree to enhance the financial value of the contract.

Scottish Secretary Ian Murray said: “This deal will save hundreds of skilled Scottish jobs, bringing a vital lifeline to communities on Lewis and in Methil. Navantia’s investment will not only secure the future of all four UK yards, but also encourage future support for UK shipbuilding and fabrication - a vital cornerstone of our defence and clean energy sectors.”

“Scotland has a proud industrial past. Today, the workers of Fife and Lewis can look forward to a bright industrial future.”

Defence Secretary John Healey said: “This agreement keeps vital defence manufacturing in the UK and protects skilled jobs at historic shipyards across our nations.

"It strengthens our sovereign capability to support Royal Navy operations worldwide, while building the industrial partnerships that will drive growth.”

SNP MSP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Alasdair Allan has warmly warmly welcomed the announcement.

Mr Allan commented: “This is clearly great news for workers at Arnish, their families and the wider economy of the Western Isles. It’s certainly a welcome announcement as people prepares for the Christmas break.

“Navantia appear to have a strong record in the maritime industry with strong financial backing and a plan for the future.

“I would like to thank the hard work undertaken by all parties who helped bring this deal to fruition and those who have continued to support the workforce. This includes but is not limited to the Deputy First Minister and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

“As we begin to approach the new year, I am sure both myself and others look forward to seeing what this new chapter in Arnish’s history will bring.”
