New tartan for South Uist

28 August 2018

A new, official Isle of South Uist tartan has been registered.

It comes a year after the island gained official recognition for their flag.

Former councillor, Donnie Steele, who championed the flag recognition, designed and registered the tartan with the Official Scottish Register of Tartans.

The weave is primarily based on the Flag of South Uist in green, blue, black and white.

The copyright will remain in South Uist.

Uist Gifts - which Mr Steele co-owns - aims to sell tartan gifts and clothing in the near future.

The firm said a percentage of profits from the tartan will go to local good causes.

Mr Steele said: “Since the flag recognition I have been working on innovative ideas that can enhance South Uist and the surrounding Islands.

“To have the tartan officially recognised by the tartan authority is another enormous boost for the Island and can only enhance the name and brand of South Uist.

“Discussions with our community landlord Storas Uibhist and key stakeholders such as community councils were very positive, and the green light was given to drive this forward.”
