Severe travel disruption for homeward bound islanders 11/8/14
Islanders heading home at the end of the school holiday face serious travel disruptions on the mainland.
Bad weather caused by Hurricane Bertha unexpectedly veered towards the Western Isles bringing torrential downpours and localised flooding in places overnight.
Intending ferry passengers are facing disruption on mainland roads because of bad weather.
The Ullapool to Inverness road was closed on Monday due to a landslip. Many routes in the Highlands have been hit by flooding.
There are various reports of fallen trees and branches on roads across the Highlands and Islands.
Police are advising road users only to travel if required -
Scot Rail says rail lines are were severely impacted by flooding.
Passengers are urged to avoid rail travel between Inverness and Perth.
No trains ran on the Aberdeen to Inverness route for a period due to due to flooding and debris on the line. The line faces more disruption and delays with buses running between washed out sections.
Trains to and from Inverness and Glasgow and Edinburgh are also seriously affected.
Rail tickets purchased for today (Mon) will be honoured for Tuesday travel, says Scot Rail. Alternatively, passengers can get a refund.
