Hebrides News

Significant coastal flooding is expected in parts of the Western Isles around high tide tonight, on Sunday evening, due to a combination of high water levels, wind and waves.

There could be widespread flooding of low-lying land and roads, and overtopping from large waves in exposed locations.

Water levels tonight will be the highest experienced over recent days.

Sepa, Scotland’s environment agency, has issued flooding warnings for causeways and surrounding areas at Vatersay, Eriskay, South Ford, North Ford, Baleshare, Berneray, Seilebost and Luskentyre, and the Braighe.

West facing low-lying ground and coastal communities such as at Balivanich and airport may be affected. Inland drains may prevent freshwater draining into the sea at Iochdar and Stinky Bay bringing additional flooding risk.

Ardmore to Loch Carnan, Clachan na Luib, as well as at Locheport and Lochmaddy may experience flooding by the sea.

Areas at risk on Barra, include the coastline from Leideag through Castlebay to Kentangavel, Brevig and Earsary, and around the airport and at Eoligarry.

Leverburgh may be affected as well as around Stornoway harbour.
