Scotland football legend Billy McNeil is to present a trophy to the winners of the island football competition held in his name.
The outstanding Celtic player, who captained the team to glory and became the first British Club to win the coveted European Cup, arrives in Benbecula on Saturday to watch the hotly contested final between Barra and Iochdar Saints.
It will be a family fun day event with a bouncy castle, barbeque and other attractions. Kick-off is at 2.30pm and a large crowd is expected.
In the evening, Billy Macneil, who was capped 29 times for Scotland, is the guest of honour at a dinner dance held by Uist Celtic Supporters Club.
Iain MacNeil, vice chairman of Uist Celtic Supporters, said: “We are delighted to be able to welcome Celtic’s most successful Captain and iconic figure Billy McNeill to the Islands, it’s a rarity to have such a privilege.
“His presence will make our first ever supporters dinner/dance that bit extra special. On behalf of the supporters club I would like to thank our committee for all their hard work and our honorary president and Celtic director, Brian Wilson for making this all possible.”
Uist and Benbecula Football Association chairman Calum Morrison said: “We're looking forward to a first class match between Uist and Barra's top two teams this weekend. They played out a thriller in the R J MacLeod final and a repeat would do nicely.
Saints, as convincing league winners, would have to start as favourites, but Barra are certainly capable of causing an upset. They're not as consistent as Saints but are talented, with the ability to beat anyone on their day. Should be a close call.”
Mr Morrison added: “We're privileged to have a true great in Billy MacNeill presenting his commemorative trophy and hope he enjoys the game. Uist Celtic Supporters have generously donated a new trophy which will replace the old cup in future.
