Election hustings
Sabbath observance and sports centres
Charlie McGrigor said Sabbath observance and Sunday rest was a matter of individual choice though it was “very important for people to have time off.”
“It was reasonable to undertake leisure activity on a Sunday,” he said, adding: “If people are asked to work Sundays they should get a healthy bonus.”
Donald Crichton said: “Irrespective of you have faith or not, Sunday has served this community well.” He said he would back any Sunday trading ban.
Peter Morrison respected tradition but supportive of Sunday flights and ferries as well as opening sports centres on Sundays.
Alasdair Allan said he supported having a day off campaigning: “Six days shalt thou fight Labour.”
He said he supported local tradition but declined to get pulled into controversy over seven day opening of Stornoway Sports Centre because he’s fallen out enough with the council.
To loud applause Donald Crichton said it would not be right to require “people to work in the sports centre so I could enjoy my leisure activity.“
