A 20mph zone is being introduced in Castlebay for a period of 18 months from next
week.
The temporary speed limit may be made permanent if is deemed effective and receives
support.
Castlebay has an existing 20mph speed limit adjacent to the school. The new 20mph
limit will cover a larger area of Castlebay, with the addition of a new 30mph buffer
zone.
The 20 mph limit affects Castlebay from a point 65 metres north west of St Brendan's
Road junction and then in an easterly direction to a point 60 metres north west of
the most westerly Glen Road junction, an overall distance of about 1115 metres.
St Brendan's Road, Maol Domhnaich, Carran Cismaol, Horve Road, Ciosmul Cottages and
Pier Road are also covered by the reduced limit
The 30 mph will apply to the A888 main road from a point 540m northwest of the Nask
junction and then in a southerly direction to a point 65 metres north west of the
St Brendan's Road junction, an overall distance of 820 metres.
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar which is testing out the lower speed limit said: “The Scottish
Government National Strategy for 20mph speed limits has placed an expectation on
Local Authorities to expand 20mph speed limits and ensure all appropriate roads in
built-up areas have a safer speed limit.
“The National Strategy and the Castlebay 20mph zone seeks to reduce perceptions of
road danger, increase road safety, encourage people to walk and wheel, and create
more pleasant streets and neighbourhoods, by providing a balance between different
road users.”
