Tesco has ditched its longstanding Sunday closure practice for Lewis, opting to trade
on every day of the week. Sunday opening commenced at its Stornoway supermarket for
the first time today but the move has greatly divided opinion across the island.
On two occasions a police car cruised through the car park but there was no trouble
to report. Hundreds of customers crossed the threshold during the day - outnumbering
the group of four protesters positioned by the entrance but management will just
have to wait and see how Sunday footfall performs after the initial surge of demand
fades.
