The world’s largest semi-submersible oil rig is moving away from the Lewis skyline.

The Ocean GreatWhite has been moored in the North Minch, close to the Stornoway - Ullapool ferry route.

The 123-metre-long platform arrived off the Western Isles following a five month voyage from Singapore via Las Palmas in the Canaries.

Today, she is due to enter the recently refurbished Kishorn Port for two months of servicing and preparation work.

Ocean GreatWhite has a contract to drill between three to six exploration wells in the deep water and harsh environment off Shetland, including a gas prospect in the Norwegian Sea.

Drilling was deferred from last year to avoid bad weather at the start of winter.

The rig was built in Korea in 2016 and is owned by Houston-based Diamond Offshore.

Company president Marc Edwards said she should be ready to commence drilling for four months from early March.

The upgrade contract is the first major contract for Kishorn for 40 years.
