A new 100-seater spectator stand has been installed at Point Football Club grounds.

A replacement was needed for the previous rusting structure which was becoming a “health and safety issue.”

As well as being eye-catching in the Point colours, the new covered unit is also galvanised, so should not deteriorate in bad weather.

It also has double the capacity of the old stand.

But with no fixtures on the horizon due to the covid restrictions, fans will have to wait to try out the new seating.

Costs escalated from the initial estimates due to extra groundworks being required but community windfarm group, Point and Sandwick Trust, doubled their donation to £45,000.

Otherwise, the project would have been in “jeopardy” as the additional groundworks were necessary, highlighted Mr Macsween.

Substantial funding was also awarded by the Landfill Fund Grant, run locally by Third Sector Hebrides.

Club secretary, Iain Macsween, said the original aim was to have everything completed by April, for what should have been the start of the football season.

“We got the concrete pad laid down during the winter and that was quite a job because the weather was terrible.”

They were “almost ready to roll” when the project was put on hold due to the lockdown.

Construction industry rules are now relaxed and the supplier drove up from Brighton with the stand which was installed after three days work.
