Cllr Paul Steele has been announced as the new leader of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
It follows a ballot amongst councillors this afternoon.
Cllr Duncan Macinnes was elected deputy leader - the first time such a role has existed at the authority.
Three councillors cast their names into the hat for the top leadership contest.
In addition to the winner, Point councillor Norman Macdonald and Gordon Murray, the SNP group leader also stood.
Norman Macdonald and Paul Steele went through to the second round.
Mr Steele received 15 votes to Mr Macdonald’s ten. There was one abstention.
Later, Mr Steele put forward a motion to create a deputy leader post. He also proposed Cllr Duncan Macinnes as his choice to fill the role.
SNP group leader Gordon Murray was put forward by his party colleague, Susan Thompson.
Duncan Macinnes won the vote 15-10.
