The Co-op is in advance talks to take over the Iceland supermarket building in Stornoway town centre.

No contract has been signed but a deal appears to be imminent.

An official statement may be made by Friday though discussions could run into next week it is understood.

Iceland Stornoway operated as a franchise of the well known convenience store chain.

It opened two years ago following renovation work to the former Wee W store in Cromwell Street.

Following the proposed transfer, the building will undergo a revamp and reopen under Co-op branding.

The retailer which has been eyeing expansion in Stornoway has plans to open new stores across the country as part of a major investment programme.

Last year, it opened a new £6 million distribution depot in Inverness Airport Business Park to service its extensive network across the north of Scotland.
