A new marine engineering workshop is being built at Goat Island in Stornoway.

Due for completion in 2022 the Stornoway Port Authority building will provide a covered facility for vessel maintenance including engineering work, repairs and painting.

A boat cradle will be able to hoist vessels out of the water from the new Newton Basin marina into the workshop.

The facility will allow two vessels up to 20 metres long to be worked on at the same time. Larger sized boats can use the existing neighbouring commercial slip while a new public slipway is planned for smaller craft.

One of the repair bays inside the shed will be leased out long term while the second if for short term rent.

The steel structure with galvanised cladding will be constructed on eight metre long foundations piles sunk into the ground on land reclaimed from the sea during the marina development works.

Also incorporated will be a side lean-to workshop for metal working equipment and an adjacent store.

Parking for 14 vehicles - including two disabled spaces - will be available.

A yard in front of the boatyard doors will accommodate a boat hoist while doubling up as a wash-down area to hose down hulls before painting.

Office, canteen and toilets will be sited in a pair of linked portacabins or modular units - currently out for tender in a separate contract - on the southern face of the site.

Ayrshire firm 3b Construction won the main contract for the building with a sub-contract to Breedon.
