Murdo A Murray father comes from Swainbost in Ness and his mother was from Borve, Lewis. They settled in Glasgow before they felt called to Home Mission service first in Coigach and then in Applecross. Hence the reason he is often called am sometimes referred to as “Murdo Apple.”
After completing my studies he wanted to work in the Western Isles and following a period in Kishorn and South Rona he took the chance to work on the Barvas Sewerage scheme with R J Mcleod Contractors.
In 1977 he joined the Comhairle as an Assistant Engineer and became Director of Technical Services in 1994. He also played a leading role in the development of the major transportation infrastructure that linked the Isles.
These include the Vatersay Causeway, the Scalpay Bridge, the Sound of Harris Ferry Service, the Berneray Causeway, the Eriskay Causeway and the Sound of Barra Ferry Service and the upgrading of the Western Isles Spinal Route.
