Travellers on Ullapool - Inverness road risk being stranded as Met Office upgrades weather warning to amber

The Met Office has upgraded a severe weather warning for snow to amber status which  could affect people travelling by ferry between the islands and north Highland region.

It is safer not to drive in the impacted area - which includes the Ullapool - Inverness route - during the worsening conditions forecasted from this afternoon to Thursday evening.  

Frequent heavy snow showers will continue to affect northwest Scotland, disrupting travel across the region said the Met Office.

Travel delays on roads are likely, stranding some vehicles and passengers.

Some delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are also likely

There is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off

Power cuts are likely and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.

Meanwhile, a period of strong winds on Sunday may bring disruption to travel and utilities to the Western Isles highlighted the Met Office.
