Merchant Navy Day is being marked with the flying of the Red Ensign in locations in the islands.
The official flag of the Merchant Navy is flown ashore to raise awareness of the country’s dependence as an island nation on past, present and future seafarers.
Willie Macfarlane, secretary of the local branch of the Merchant Navy Association hoisted the flag in Perceval Square in Stornoway.
Point Community Council also have the ensign flying at Seaview football pitch to mark the contribution of retired and serving seafarers from the district.
Cobhair Bharraigh held an event in support of Merchant Navy Day in Castlebay at the weekend.
A Merchant Navy Day commemorative service in the Ferry Terminal building on Saturday 8th September at 1130 am. This service is open to anyone who wishes to attend.
A special service hosted by the Western Isles branch of the Merchant Navy Association will be held in the Stornoway ferry terminal at 11.20am this Saturday. This event is open to anyone who wishes to attend.
Virtually 100% of food and supplies for the Western Isles is transported by sea.
The UK relies on Merchant Navy seafarers for 95% of imports, including half the food we eat.
Some 75% of UK exports are shipped from UK ports, some of which are supporting the campaign by encouraging visiting ships to sound their foghorns at 10am today.
