Air services face potential disruption today (Monday) following a severe technical problem with UK air traffic control computer systems this morning.

Loganair said it is “hopeful” of being able to operate most internal Scotland flights on the basis of local coordination and with a minimum of disruption.

Flights for the Western Isles from Glasgow, Inverness and Edinburgh have not been affected so far today it is understood.

However, people travelling with connections further afield may experience delayed or cancelled flights.

Britain's National Air Traffic Service (NATS) said: “We are currently experiencing a technical issue and have applied traffic flow restrictions to maintain safety.

"Engineers are working to find and fix the fault.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."

The agency added the technical issue is “affecting our ability to automatically process flight plans.

“Until our engineers have resolved this, flight plans are being input manually which means we cannot process them at the same volume, hence we have applied traffic flow restrictions.

“Our technical experts are looking at all possible solutions to rectify this as quickly as possible.

“Our priority is ensuring every flight in the UK remains safe and doing everything we can to minimise the impact. Please contact your airline for information on how this may affect your flight.  We are sincerely sorry for the disruption this is causing.”

Loganair said: “Due to a network-wide outage of air traffic control systems in the UK, all airlines expect delays and disruption throughout the day.

“Although a situation beyond our control, Loganair is offering customers travelling today (Monday) the opportunity to rebook within the next 48 hours, free of charge, subject to availability.”
