An islander dialled 999 at midnight after someone went off with the keys for his flat.

He was locked out and could not get access.

Shortly beforehand he had gone to Stornoway police station to see if they could help.

Then he called the emergency number and lost his temper.

Angus Paul Mackinnon of Perceval Road, Stornoway, started shouting and swearing down the line after being advised to stay overnight with a friend or call out a council joiner, Stornoway Sheriff Court heard.

He made two further 999 calls about his house keys.

Police went to his address and arrested him outside Stornoway Sheriff Court was told.

Procurator fiscal Alison McKenzie said the 24-year-old was taken to Stornoway police station where he told one officer: “I’m going to punch you in the face.”

Later, he took umbrage at police, saying: “Someone took my house keys and I’m the one getting arrested.”

Mackinnon, who represented himself in court, pleaded guilty to making abusive comments during a 999 call and, on a different occasion, threatening violence to a police constable.

He told the court: “I have stopped drinking since then.”

Sheriff David Sutherland placed him on a community payback order with the requirement to undertake 60 hours of community service work within six months.
