Hebrides News

Stornoway lifeboat towed a round-the-world yacht into harbour yesterday.

The 15.5 metre long Moon suffered engine trouble on its north Atlantic leg from Greenland to Sweden

The two people onboard, Annika Koch and Björn Christensson, were happy enough to continue under canvas but were concerned about the lack of engine power in an emergency.

Weather pushed them off course for the Faroes and going with the wind set them towards the Western Isles.

But their gearbox packed in some 400 miles off the Hebrides.

Attempts to contact UK coastguard last Wednesday and Thursday were initially unsuccessful said the couple.

On Friday, they declined the offer of a long distance tow, adding days onto their voyage.

Coastguards spoke to them on radio when they came within VHF range some 60 miles off the coast. Again, the pair declined a tow.

Attempting to rounding the Butt of Lewis without engine power in the strong cross currents was a struggle but they managed by sailing to the north.

The lifeboat met them off Arnish and towed them to the pontoons.
